Africa Missions Report

“Team Calvary” (six individuals from Milpitas Calvary Assembly) left Milpitas, California on
February 25, 2008, bound for Kenya, East Africa on a missions trip.  The team consisted of
Chuck DeKeno, Cindy Heazlit, Genevieve Tokash, Lonn McMilin, my wife Gevena, and me.
In Nairobi, Kenya, Calvary’s team joined eight other individuals from different parts of the U.
S., including Mike and Marigold Cheshier with Firewind Ministries.

Under the direction of Mike and Marigold, we began our two weeks of ministry in a country
where people were still reeling from the results of the outbreaks of violence that followed
the country’s recent presidential election.  Although there were some uncertainties as to
what we would  face  when we arrived in Kenya, we left California with the firm conviction
that we were on a God-given assignment, and we were anxious to see how God would use
us.

The morning after we arrived, we left to drive to Narok.  There we visited two refugee camps
where we met 2000-3000 people who had been driven out of or fled from their homes when
the violence erupted.  This represented a small number of the hundreds of thousands of
Kenyans who had been displaced from their homes.  We were able to give them 10,000
pounds of food, blankets, and a few mattresses.  What a blessing it was for us to be able to
use money people from Milpitas Calvary Assembly had given to purchase these supplies.
At one camp, a pastor shared how they had run out of food the day before and he gathered
the people together to pray.  He told them that if they would pray and ask God, he would
provide for them … and then we showed up the next day!

Our next place of ministry was to the Samburu people in Maralal, near the Ethiopian border.
After going back to Nairobi, it took two days of hard driving to reach Maralal.  The distance
was not great, but the roads were horrendous!  During the entire two weeks we were there,
we experienced a total of 11 blowouts/flat tires on three vehicles, as well as other
mechanical challenges.  But, we arrived safe and were ready to go to work!

The rough, hard stats certainly don’t tell the whole story, but here is a summary of what was
accomplished during our ministry in the Maralal area:

•        Set up and operated a medical clinic for four (4) days, two days inside a church
building, and two days outside underneath a tree … treated and ministered to 1200 – 1500
individuals during this time.
•        Sent out two evangelism/preaching teams each day for five (5) days
•        Ministered in three schools to approximately 1100 children
•        Held 33 evangelistic meetings and ministered to over 2200 people
•        Saw approximately 1400 people total accept Christ as their Savior
•        Left money to build three new churches in the Maralal area and three in the Masai
Mara (Milpitas Calvary Assembly was directly responsible for providing the funds for three of
these churches.)
•        Purchased two new bicycles and gave them to a pastor and his wife who were
ministering to four different congregations.  They had no other means of transportation and
walked everywhere they went.  One of the churches that will be built will be for one of their
congregations that currently meets out in the open underneath a tree.
These figures don’t begin to tell the whole story, but at least they will give you an idea of the
results of this trip.  God truly was with us and ministered through us.  Will we go again?  Try
to stop us!
